This is one house, not a portfolio: a 1,120 sq ft steel house on fourteen private acres in the high desert outside Joshua Tree, California, sleeping six, opening late 2026. Where the house is
The house sits on fourteen acres of open desert north of the town of Joshua Tree, in San Bernardino County, about fifteen minutes from the national park boundary. The land is flat, graded, and has mature Joshua trees on it. Nothing is built on the parcels either side, and the views run out to the mountains in most directions.
It is north of Highway 62, which is worth knowing for two reasons. The park is south of the highway, so you cross it going in — and everything that makes noise or light in this valley is also south of you, so the sky overhead stays dark.
The last stretch is dirt: about two-thirds of a mile of graded road in off Border Avenue, via Campanula and Center. It is flat and maintained enough for any rental car — the kind of dirt road that tells you that you have arrived somewhere, not the kind that costs you a tire.
This is the high desert, not Palm Springs. The valley floor around Joshua Tree sits at roughly 2,700 to 3,000 feet, which in practice means it runs about ten degrees cooler than the Coachella Valley below and gets genuinely cold at night in winter. The dark sky is a consequence of the same thing: no city glow, low humidity, and a national park next door that holds an International Dark Sky Park designation.

Renting a house for a group
Six people, two bedrooms, two bathrooms. The limit applies during the day as well as overnight, so there are no day visitors on top of the six and no events, weddings or parties beyond the guests staying in the house.
Within that, fourteen acres changes what a group stay feels like. There is a premium sound system distributed across the property, a hot tub, a fire pit and private paths out through the desert to a clearing kept for stargazing. County noise rules still apply overnight and the quiet hours go out with the house rules — but the difference between this and a house on a quarter acre in town is the whole reason the land cost what it did.
What off-grid actually means here
The house runs on solar with battery storage rather than the grid. Everything works exactly as you would expect — lights, air conditioning, hot water, music, charging. Clean, quiet, and you will not think about it once.
It is quieter than a grid-tied house, and it is the reason the sky overhead stays as dark as it does.
The house itself
A Honomobo HO3 — an architectural modular steel house, black, 1,120 sq ft, two bed and two bath, built in a factory in Canada and set on a graded pad here. Two full-height glass walls, and the living-room wall folds all the way open onto the deck.
It is being built now. The land is graded, the module is in the factory, and the whole thing is documented as it happens — the pad, the compaction tests, the module coming together. Late 2026 for the opening, with the email list getting the dates before the listing goes public.
